Member Center Spotlight: Aisling Irish Community & Cultural Center
The Coalition of Irish Immigration Centers is proud to highlight one of our longtime member centers: the Aisling Irish Community & Cultural Center, a vibrant hub for the Irish and Irish American community in Yonkers and the Bronx since 1996. With a mission to support the Irish diaspora through social services, senior and youth programs, and cultural initiatives, the Aisling Center has become a trusted home away from home for countless individuals and families.
A Rich History Of Service
Aisling’s story began in the early 1990s as Tír na Nóg (“Land of the Young”), founded by Sr. Edna McNicholas and Fr. Tom Flynn to support a growing number of Irish immigrants in New York. By 1996, the Center moved to 990 McLean Avenue, where Irish immigrants, with limited funds but incredible determination, transformed the space into the Aisling Irish Community Center (AICC).
Over the years, Aisling continued to expand, creating a home for Irish dance, cultural programs, and social services. The community’s generosity allowed the Center to purchase the building outright in 2018 and unveil a fully renovated space in 2022, ensuring its legacy for generations to come.
Serving All Generations
Today, the Aisling Center offers programs for all ages:
- Youth Programs: art, Irish language, music and dance, karate, and the popular Celtic Summer Camp.
- Senior Programs: the Young at Heart group, chair yoga, book clubs, and film screenings.
- Community Services: wellness workshops, counseling, AA meetings, fitness programs, and cultural events.
Through initiatives like Feed the Homeless and the Aisling Cultural Event Series, the Center has extended its reach well beyond McLean Avenue, showing the lasting impact of Irish community values.
