Your Rights as a Lawful Permanent Resident (LPR)
Irish in Motion: Connecting Irish communities with care, insight, and support.
If you hold a green card, you’ve already taken a big step toward building your life in the U.S. And we want you to know, we’re here for you. We get it. We’re all in motion. No matter your journey, Irish in Motion is here to support you and your loved ones.
Below are some important things to keep in mind as a lawful permanent resident. You can also use this site to connect with a center near you and download helpful guides. As always, you’re not alone, reach out if you need support.
As a lawful permanent resident, you have the right to live and work in the U.S., and even if your green card is lost or expired, your legal status remains intact. Only an immigration judge can take that status away. Do NOT sign anything that gives up your status without first speaking to a judge.
Before You Travel
Consult an immigration lawyer before traveling if:
-
- You have a criminal record, even for minor offenses/arrests, or a pending criminal case.
- You have pending applications with USCIS or immigration court.
- You have past immigration violations or challenging interactions with CBP.
- You are a conditional resident with a two-year green card.
Key Points:
- Your valid 10-year green card is proof of status
- You cannot lose your green card status unless an immigration judge says so.
- Never sign away your status under pressure; ask to speak to an attorney.
We hope these resources helped clarify your rights and responsibilities. Immigration is a journey filled with change, questions, and decisions, but you don’t have to go it alone. The Coalition of Irish Immigration Centers is here to walk with you every step of the way. Whether you’re adjusting your status, planning a trip, or considering citizenship, we’re here to help guide and support you and your loved ones.
