October 13, 2017–The Coalition of Irish Immigration Centers (CIIC) and its membership throughout the United States are thrilled to announce #WhyCitizenship, a national campaign encouraging Irish nationals who are legal permanent residents of the United States to pursue their U.S. citizenship.

Throughout the week of October 16th, CIIC and its membership will highlight the benefits of citizenship via social media. Additionally, centers throughout the U.S. will have information about citizenship available for review, and many will be hosting citizenship events in their region. To view the #WhyCitizenship information flyer, click here.

Becoming a U.S. citizen affords people numerous benefits, as well as permanence, yet many eligible Irish nationals do not take advantage of the citizenship process. It is estimated that there are more than 30,000 Irish legal permanent residents throughout the U.S. who are eligible to apply for citizenship, yet just over 4,000 individuals applied for naturalization in the period 2013 through 2015.

Celine Kennelly, CIIC Board President, stated “the benefits of becoming a U.S. citizen greatly outweigh any doubts about the process a person might have. Freedom of travel, increased access to benefits, no fear of deportation and the right to vote are only a few of the benefits that answer the question #WhyCitizenship.”

Individuals are encouraged to contact their local Irish center to find out more about the citizenship application process or attend one of the regional events listed below, and find out #WhyCitizenship.

ABOUT THE COALITION OF IRISH IMMIGRATION CENTERS

The Coalition of Irish Immigration Centers (CIIC) was established in 1996 to promote the welfare of Irish immigrants in the US at a national level. The CIIC is funded by a generous grant from the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade’s Emigrant Support Programme.

The Coalition serves as a national umbrella organization representing Irish immigration and community centers throughout the United States that are committed to providing support to Irish immigrants. The Coalition strives to be a strong, cohesive and representative voice for the needs of its member centers, and in turn the greater community of Irish immigrants in the US. The Coalition prioritizes the sharing of information and the creation of best practices as a way to support and assist its member centers in their direct service work. CIIC member organizations are located in California, Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Philadelphia and Washington.
