Planning a trip abroad? We know life keeps moving, and you may need to travel for family, work, or a much-needed break. As a permanent resident, you can travel freely, but there are a few key things to keep in mind to protect your status.

KEY POINTS
- Always travel with a valid green card or official proof of permanent resident status.
- If you’re planning to be abroad for more than 6 months, speak with an attorney first.
- Never sign Form I-407—it’s used to voluntarily give up your green card. Ask to speak to a lawyer.
Have a criminal record? Even something minor?
Talk to a legal expert before you go. It could make all the difference.
Important Reminders
- Travel with the contact information for your lawyer and your consulate on a separate paper.
- Let your family know your travel plans and check in when you land.
- If detained, try to contact a lawyer or have someone advocate for you.
