Member Center Spotlight: New York Irish Center
The Coalition of Irish Immigration Centers is proud to feature Coalition Member, New York Irish Center, a vibrant hub of community, culture, and care in Long Island City, Queens. Since opening its doors in 2005, the Center has been dedicated to sharing Ireland’s culture and fostering collaboration between people of all heritages through social services, cultural programs, and community space.
A Strong Foundation
The idea for the Center began in the 1980s when Belfast native Fr. Colm Campbell envisioned a gathering place for the Irish in New York. With the encouragement of Cavan native Paddy Reilly and the support of community leaders, property on Jackson Avenue was secured in 2003. Thanks to the sweat equity of early members and the generosity of Irish building contractors, the Center was renovated and officially opened in 2005.
Today, the New York Irish Center proudly stands as a lasting home for the community. Its location, just one stop from Grand Central on the 7 Train, makes it accessible to Irish neighborhoods throughout Queens, including Sunnyside, Woodside, and Maspeth.
Programs That Make a Difference
The New York Irish Center offers a wide range of services and programs, including:
- Social Services – providing essential support, including senior care programs.
- Cultural Programs – hosting more than 140 cultural events each year, from jazz and comedy nights to theater, dance, film, and literary events.
- Community Space – offering a welcoming place for people of all backgrounds to gather and connect.
The Center is especially renowned for its programs and innovative cultural offerings, which bring together generations and foster a strong sense of community and belonging.
