July 3, 2013-New York, NY— The Coalition of Irish Immigration Centers (CIIC) welcomes the positive movement towards Comprehensive Immigration Reform in the US, with the recent vote and passage of the Senate Bill S.744, the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act.

The bill would give a path to citizenship to some of the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the US, which includes 50,000 undocumented Irish, bringing them out of the shadows. The bill also increases spending on the border to $45bn, doubles the number of border agents from 20,000 to 40,000, will see the construction of 700 miles of new fencing and increases the use of drones. In effect this militarizes the border and will provide one border guard for every 250ft.

“We are delighted to see the bill come out of the Senate with such strong support and we applaud the 14 Republican Senators who voted in favor of the bill. They are certainly champions of the Irish community this week,” stated Celine Kennelly, Vice President of the CIIC Board of Directors and Member of The Irish Comprehensive Immigration Reform Working Group. “We are very grateful to them, the ‘Gang of 8’ and all who worked to bring the bill out of the Senate. It is not a perfect bill, but it certainly a vast improvement on what we have now and we look forward to continuing to work to better the bill as it moves through the House and on to Conference Committee.”
